Oltenia is guarded in the north of the Meridional Carpathians, and west, south and east of flowing water: the Danube, Olt, respectively. Jiu River crosses the region in the north-south and divides into two almost equal parts, one in which relief apre to mirror the other. Northern Oltenia is mountainous, being present here two massive: Parang (east of the river Jiu) and Retezat-Godeanu (west of the river Jiu). South of the Carpathians are the sub-Carpathian area, represented by a series of hills (Hill Bran Măgura Slatioara, Gorjului Hills, Hill Barz) and depressions (Novaci, Tismana, Târgu Jiu). In the northwest are the Mehedinti Plateau, hills Coşuştei Severin and depression. South of the Plateau Subcarpaţi getic, which is divided into platforms: Strehaiei (west of the river Jiu, is subdivided in Huşniţei platforms and flounder), Jiu (crossed by Jiu) and Oltetului (east of Jiu). In the south of the Plain of Oltenia Oltenia, which is the western most sector of the Romanian Plain. Oltenia Plain consists of plains and Blahniţei Bailesti (west of Jiu) and Romanaţilor (east of Jiu).
